ANNE DORNE has been contracted for the past five years as part of the school’s Literacy Enhancement Programme. Anne works four hours each week as a one-to-one tutor teaching strategies for spelling and written language. She has also been involved in classroom support and staff development. Last year an exciting new programme was introduced to assist students with reading and spelling development. The Lexia computer programmes have been networked throughout the school and are available to students of all abilities to improve their skills from early reading and spelling to adult level. Anne is helping to train both teaching and support staff in the use of the programmes and we are fortunate in having the expert help of Becky Frost, librarian, who has had experience in administering the programme. Part of Anne’s focus is on targeting students who show some of the learning characteristics associated with dyslexia and giving them some one-to-one assistance and class support. With raised awareness of the needs of these students, Parklands is pro-active in making the school environment a supportive place for them.
